Jim Corbett National Park: One
of the oldest wildlife reserves in India, Corbett National Park is
famous for its wide variety of wildlife of Tigers, Leopards and
Elephants and its beautiful location. Aboded in the foothills of the
Himalayas, the majestic Corbett National Park is home to a variety
of flora and fauna. Corbett National Park was established in 1936,
as the Hailey National Park. India's first national park and the
first sanctuary to come under Project Tiger, Corbett supports a
variety of vegetation making it the ideal habitat for the Tiger and
its prey. The park is spread over two districts of Uttaranchal -
Pauri and Nainital. Dense stands of sal and mixed deciduous forests
welcome your visit to Jim Corbett National Park while the grasslands
in the valleys offer visitors a better view of the wildlife.
Orchids, tropical creepers and bamboo grow on the hills.
The best
way to view wildlife is by elephant safari. It is possible to travel
deep into the park on elephant back and to get very near to wildlife
without frightening them away. It provides shelter to Tigers as well
as its prey, which include four kinds of Deer, Wild Boar and some
lesser-known animals. The most commonly observed wildlife are langur
monkeys, rhesus macaques, wild boars, spotted deer, sambar, peacocks
and wild elephants. The park is also a birdwatcher's paradise
containing over 580 different species of birds. The tourists have to
reach the gate half an hour in advance to complete the formalities
for the entry into the park. Kindly gather all the necessary
information for visiting the national park. Obtaining the gate pass
and permit from the park administration centre at Ramnagar is
mandatory for all the visitors in Corbett National Park. There are
various gates to enter the Corbett National Park.
Do's and Don'ts in the Park :
* Please enter the Jim Corbett National Park after taking the
necessary permits.
* Please accompany a Nature Guide for spotting the wildlife and the
scenic landscapes.
* Drive slowly in the National Park. Enjoy the elephant and jeep
safari but avoid the disturbance to the wildlife.
* Stick to the known and guided roads and trails. Driving off track
would tamper the daily activities of animals and the growth of the
trees.
* Maintain a safe distance from the animals and keep their life
undisturbed.
* Please do not put on your car stereo or transistor. The quieter
you are, more is the possibility of your watching the wildlife.
* Wear less bright clothes as the bright clothes distract the
animals attracting their attention.
* Don't carry gun or a pistol. Feel free to shoot snaps with a
camera.
* Don't light campfires or smoke in the forest.
* Don't get off your vehicle at a point where it is not allowed.
* Keep the park pollution-free and litter free by disposing off the
whole garbage into the bag provided.
* Consumption of non- vegetarian food and alcohol is strictly
prohibited inside the national park.
Nainital: Nestled in the Uttaranchal Himalayas, Nainital is
one of northern India's oldest hill resorts- a pretty lake town and
Kumaon's largest settlement. A convenient getaway from the plains of
northern India, this is a picturesque little town, centred around a
limpid blue lake and replete with enchanting colonial buildings,
winding pathways and some of the most exquisite views you'll see of
the Kumaon hills. The Naini Tal or lake, shaped like the eye (`nain')
from which it draws its name, is the focal point of the town.
Surrounded by seven hills known as the Saptshring, the lake is a hot
favourite with boaters. Once this area had many lakes and it was
called the City of 60 lakes or 'Chakta'. Most of the lakes in the
region have disappeared and whatever remains is just a glimpse of
what they might have been in the past. Today the life of Nainital
revolves around the lake of Naini. But there are few other lakes
around Nainital which are equally beautiful and attractive as the
Naini lake. On the way from Nainital to Bhimtal is a group of seven
lakes called the Sattal. Nature has really provided this place
beauty in abundance. At Bhimtal you can enjoy boating and have food
at the restaurant on the island in middle of the lake. No one leaves
Nainital without visiting Snow view point. At an altitude of 2270
meters, it is not just higher then Nainital but also very colder.
The main reason people come here is because of the view it gives of
the white with snow peaks of Himalayas. The most favourite activity
of tourists here is to take pictures of the spectacular sight, no
one wants to miss the beautiful photo shoot opportunity here. 2.5
kilometers from the town, you can either walk up here, take a taxi
or a cable car. Any ways it is an enjoyable journey and the place is
worth it.
Kausani: Located 53 km to the north of Almora, Kausani, is a
picturesque hill station famous for its scenic splendour and its
spectacular 300 km-wide view of the Himalayas. Situated atop a
narrow ridge, at 6075-ft (1890 metres) above sea level, Kausani is
often compared with Switzerland. It is thickly forested, and
separated from the soaring Nanda Devi ranges by low mountains. In
1929, Mahatma Gandhi stayed here at the Anashakti Ashram, and was
greatly impressed by its environs. Kausani is also the birthplace of
the poet Sumitra Nandan Pant. This is a small town covering an area
of just 5.2 sq. km with a population of 4046 as per the last census.
One can spend time strolling through the town and taking in its
natural beauty. Some spectacular views of the hills exist and
several snow-capped peaks spanning a 300-km range can be seen from
vantage points around. One of the best spots from which to
photograph the Nanda Devi range is the State Bungalow at Kausani.
A
particularly good time is prior to sunrise when one can watch the
sun slowly lighting up the tips of the Nanda Devi range. Perched
atop a 5 km long saddle-shaped ridge of the Kashaya Hill, Almora at
an altitude of 1646 m is a charming mountain resort in the
Himalayas. It was founded by Raja Kalyan of the Chand Dynasty in
1560 A.D. Traces of the old Chand Fort, paved roads, wooden houses
with beautifully carved facades and homes decorated with traditional
‘Alpana’ murals still reflect Almora’s pride in its heritage.
